Since 2004, Brian Williams has been bringing NBC viewers their nightly dose of news coverage. Over 9.3 million viewers tune in to listen to his attention grabbing voice tell them the stories of the day.
But after a slip-up in 2013 on the David Letterman Show while recalling an incident that took place in Iraq in 2003, (read the New York Times article about the incident here) Williams’ reputation began to crumble for many of his loyal viewers.
Stephen P. Burke, the chief executive of NBCUniversal was quoted by the New York Times saying, “By his actions, Brian has jeopardized the trust millions of Americans place in NBC News. His actions are inexcusable and this suspension is severe and appropriate.”
Were his actions in this instance inspirational? Not in the least.
Do I still consider Brian Williams an inspiration? Absolutely.
Whether it was a conscious effort to exaggerate the news or a Freudian slip, the dedication and years of reporting and anchoring he has under his belt are certainly two things I aspire to have someday.
The suspension… not so much.
